What is Seedream 4.0?
Seedream 4.0 is the 4.0 generation of ByteDance's Seedream image models. On Pixmint it sits between the free Seedream 5.0 Flash and Seedream 5.0 Pro in price, at 8 credits per image. It takes a text prompt, accepts up to four reference images and can be used to edit photos in the AI image editor.
What stands out in our examples is its taste. Given the same short prompt as the other models, Seedream 4.0 tends to add polish: more color, more decoration, a more designed composition. Whether that is a feature or a bug depends on your prompt. If you give it a precise brief it follows it; if you give it room, it fills the room.
Like the other Seedream models on Pixmint, it renders at around 2K resolution. Free-credit images are scaled to 1024 px with a small watermark.
Seedream 4.0 examples
These six images were generated with Seedream 4.0 on Pixmint. The exact prompt is printed under each one, and you can copy any of them into the tool above. Each prompt was run once, so treat the notes as impressions from a single sample, not as a benchmark.
How these examples were made
| Model | Upstream model ID called | Access path | Requested size / quality |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seedream 4.0 | doubao-seedream-4-0-20260415 | Volcengine Ark API (mainland China site), direct | 1:1, 2048 x 2048 requested, downscaled to 1024 px for this site |
- Generated on 2026-10-22 on Pixmint with the prompt printed above each image. The same prompt text was used for every model.
- One run per model per prompt, with no cherry-picking across runs.
- The images on this site are downscaled JPEG copies of the generated files.
- Limits: each image is a single sample, so it shows a tendency, not what the model does every time. GPT Image and Nano Banana requests go through a third-party relay and we cannot verify that it serves the unmodified official models. Speed and success rate were not measured, and these pages are not a benchmark.

Things to know about Seedream 4.0
- It adds decoration you may not want. When a layout must be exact, say so in the prompt ("no decoration, centered, plain background") or use a model that follows plain layouts more literally.
- Highly photographic realism is not where it shines in our samples; the Nano Banana models and Seedream 5.0 Pro look more like photographs.
- As a single sample per prompt, these observations show tendencies, not guarantees.
How Seedream 4.0 compares to other Pixmint models
Next to Seedream 5.0 Flash, which stays plain and literal, 4.0 is more ornamental and more colorful. Next to Seedream 5.0 Pro, which in our samples was darker, moodier and more detailed, 4.0 is lighter and sweeter.
Against GPT Image 2, which produced a designed, graphic look on the poster test, Seedream 4.0 is the cheaper way to get a decorated layout. Against the Nano Banana models it is less photographic and more illustrative.
The comparisons here are qualitative and based on the example images on this site. Image generation varies from run to run, so run your own prompt on two models before you commit. The models page lists every model with its price.

How do I use Seedream 4.0?
Type a prompt in the tool at the top of this page, where Seedream 4.0 is already selected. Choose an aspect ratio and how many images you want, then press Generate. You will be asked to sign in (free) because only Seedream 5.0 Flash is open to guests.
Is Seedream 4.0 free on Pixmint?
Only Seedream 5.0 Flash is free for guests, so Seedream 4.0 needs a free Pixmint account. It costs 8 credits per image. New accounts get 50 credits on first sign-in plus 20 daily credits, which on the first day is enough for about 8 Seedream 4.0 images at no cost. Free images are up to 1024 px, carry a small watermark and are for personal non-commercial use.
Can I use Seedream 4.0 images commercially?
Not today. Images made with free credits carry a watermark. Commercial use is planned to come with paid plans, which are not available yet, so today free outputs are for personal, non-commercial use only. See our terms. You are responsible for making sure your prompt and any reference images do not infringe anyone else's rights.
Why does Seedream 4.0 add extra decoration?
Short prompts leave the model room to interpret. In our poster example it added palm leaves and sparkles. Add details such as "plain background, no decoration" to hold it back.
Is Pixmint affiliated with ByteDance?
No. Pixmint is an independent service that gives access to image models from ByteDance and other providers. Model names belong to their owners.
